By mid-July the Gulf of Papagayo has settled into its second personality. Mornings arrive glassy and quiet. Afternoon cells build over the Rincón de la Vieja ridge and slide west, drop twenty minutes of warm rain on the tin roofs above the beach, and clear in time for the sunset catamarans to leave the anchorage. If you live in Playa Hermosa, this is not the off season. This is the season you can actually get a table at Ginger on a Friday.
The story visitors tell about Guanacaste's wet months is a defensive one, built around what you might miss. The story residents tell is closer to the opposite. The bay is at its most swimmable. The kitchens that were slammed in February have their attention back. The reservations open up, the produce trucks are less picked-over by noon, and the town returns to something like its own pace.
The Bay Reads Differently in July
Playa Hermosa sits inside a large sheltered bay bordered to the west by Punta Cacique, and the protected bay creates calm water ideal for swimming and snorkeling, with waves breaking gently near shore without the strong currents found at exposed Pacific beaches. That geometry matters more in green season than in dry. Swells that batter Playa Grande and the Puntarenas coast this time of year get filtered by the headland before they reach Hermosa's sand.
The snorkeling story is subtler. The two spots residents actually swim to sit around the corner from town: Playa Hermosa is one of the most popular seaside resorts on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, and the beach, in a large bay with steep hills around it, is bordered to the west by the Punta Cacique, with excellent snorkeling spots at Playa Penca and Calzón del Pobre. Both hold visibility on a calm morning and lose it after a heavy overnight cell. This spot is strongly exposed to sea conditions and visibility can deteriorate in the rainy season, so wear swimfins, keep a distance from the rocks, and don't hesitate to postpone in case of doubt, heading for the spots in Playa Penca and Calzón de Pobre in case of poor visibility. If you're new to the entry, once at the beach, walk for about ten minutes to the east, to the right when you are facing the ocean, and enter the water just past Hotel Condovac.
The rule locals follow: check the horizon at coffee. If the western sky is clean, the snorkel is on. If a squall line is already stacking over Punta Cacique, wait a day.
A Table for Every Night of the Week
Hermosa's dining bench is shorter than Tamarindo's and older. Most of the good rooms have been in the same hands for a decade or more, which is why green season here reads as a homecoming rather than a scramble. A rough resident's week:

The anchor room is still Ginger. Consistently rated one of the top restaurants in Playa Hermosa, its Asian-inspired tapas and cocktails come from Chef-owner Anne Hegney, trained at Le Cordon Bleu de Paris, whose flavors have made Ginger one of the most successful dining destinations in Playa Hermosa since 2003. Open daily 5–10pm in a treehouse setting, it celebrated 20 years in December 2023. In February the room turns over twice; in July you can walk up at seven and be seated.
Twenty-two years in one town is the real signal here. The kitchens that survive Guanacaste's slow months are the ones with owners in the pass.
On the sand, Aqua Sport operates right on the beach with tables in the sand, La Casita del Marisco specializes in fresh seafood with ocean views, and Roberto's Hotel restaurant serves breakfast and dinner to hotel guests and walk-ins. Roberto's, on the ground floor of La Gaviota Tropical, runs a long day: it is on the beach and open to the public from 7:00 AM to 9:30 PM daily. Colibrí, tucked into the Papagayo end of town, is the Sunday-lunch answer when you don't want to move fast.
The Fridge Problem, Solved by Three Short Drives
The unglamorous truth of daily life here is that Hermosa doesn't have a full supermarket inside the village. Residents solve this with a rotation.
For everyday essentials, the small store on the second beach entrance handles most of it. For a real shop, the ten-minute walk toward Coco lands you at Super Luperón, which forum regulars have described for years as a small market on the second entrance road into Playa Hermosa, with a larger Supermercado Luperón about a 10-minute walk from the beach on the main road to Coco, carrying fresh vegetables, fruit, meat, and baked goods at reasonable prices. For anything more specific, Playas del Coco is the fallback: about 20 minutes away with four large supermarkets, including Luperón and the pricier Automercado.
The Hermosa Heights hillside quietly changed this equation. Its commercial pocket at the entrance now includes a mini market, wine bar, Pure Spa, and Panamá Seafood shop. In practice, that means a walkable second option for wine and fresh fish that didn't exist a decade ago. For the households who want a Thursday-and-Friday produce run without driving north, the Farmers Market in Jaco takes place weekly and provides fresh, local produce, an excellent opportunity to support local farmers and buy fresh and tasty fruits and vegetables, and every second Tuesday a food truck from that farmers market visits the Coconut Office in Hermosa, bringing fresh and affordable fruits and vegetables directly to the neighborhood.
The Standing Weekly Rhythm
Green season is when the small weekly things get their turn back. A resident's July looks less like a checklist and more like a set of standing appointments.
- Morning coffee. Paw House Roasters is the walk that anchors the day for a lot of the north-end crowd.
- Yoga and movement. Nullieom Yoga & Meditation and Hermosa Zumba & Yoga Studio both keep their July schedules; classes are smaller and easier to drop into.
- Dive days. Rocket Frog runs to the Catalinas and, on the right weather window, the Bat Islands. July puts Bat Island and Catalinas on the board, with Manta Rays and whales audible under the water. Humpback season is the argument for tolerating a wet ride out.
- Sunset window. Catamarans still run the Gulf between cells. Cruises depart from nearby beaches and glide along the Gulf of Papagayo, offering drinks, snacks, snorkeling, and a chance to see dolphins or rays before catching one of Guanacaste's famously vivid sunsets.
- Wet-afternoon plan B. When the rain sits over the coast for a full afternoon, the drive inland works. Located about an hour from Playa Hermosa, Rincón de la Vieja is one of the most diverse active volcanic parks in Costa Rica, where you can hike through tropical dry forest to hidden waterfalls, hot springs, and wildlife like toucans and howler monkeys. Diamante Eco Adventure Park and the Congo Trail canopy are closer alternatives for a half day.
Why the Rain Is the Point
The visitor-facing framing of July in Guanacaste is that you trade weather for value. The resident framing is that you trade crowds for access. The bay reads calmer because the swell direction favors it. The kitchens have their owners back at the pass because the covers are down. The Hermosa Heights pocket, the walk to Super Luperón, and the second-Tuesday produce truck all work better without the January-through-March logistics stack layered on top.
None of this is a secret in town. It just doesn't make the top ten Google results, because the top ten results are written for the person deciding whether to book a February vacation. The July version of Hermosa belongs to the people who stayed.
